On a long non-stop 22 hour car trip (from Dallas to LA), as I was getting high from exhaustion, I started thinking about the sounds tires make on the road...and then I wondered if it could be harnessed for the forces of marketing. I was specifically thinking about the way a record works -- with a needle playing over different levels of grooves. Imagine a CD release accompanied by a music label repaving a patch of highway...along with special grooves in the road that, when driven over, give a 10-20 second clip of a song... It definitely wouldn't have high sound quality, but if it was at all recognizable, it would be really impressive (although it could get annoying for people driving that way every day). I'd like to find out how to model the physics of sounds to see if something like this is even possible (and yes, I realize different tires have different treads, but I still think there can be a generic version that would work...beats are definitely possible -- so the question is can they be layered, and can different pitches be created?
